“We have no idea what the future holds, all we can do is make decisions with the information at hand.”

For the record, he would like it stated that he wasn’t rooting through the trash. Rooting through the trash would be what someone who was spying, or trying to surreptitiously find out more about his girlfriend. And that wasn’t Andy. Andy wasn’t a snooper. In fact, Andy was all for taking things slow. He liked mystery. He liked intrigue.

He liked telling himself that so that he felt like less of a douche when rooting through Serena’s trash.

It wasn’t that he didn’t trust her, or anything like that. It was that she wouldn’t talk to him. He talked to her, sure. She probably knew his entire family history at this point, and then some, and he barely knew anything about her. And while that didn’t matter for most of the women he dated, because he barely saw her for a week, this was Serena. They’d been going out for months now and he felt like he barely knew her. That—just wouldn’t do. If there was one thing that was could be said about all Rhodes children, it was that they were nosy. Marion’s journalistic instinct didn’t just appear out of thin air.

At the moment, though, he was done doing said rooting, and was now focusing on the invitation in his hand. It was a wedding invitation for one. Weddings were generally happy things that got stuck up on the bulletin board, on display for all to see, rather than—tossed in the trash. In fact, he was sure that it going in the trash meant that she wasn’t going, and that—wasn’t a good sign.

“What’re you doing?”

Andy’s head snapped up, and his mouth gaped slightly as he looked over at Serena, trying to come up with a plausible explanation for what he had actually been doing . None were coming to mind, and the longer he was silent the more suspicious she got, and soon she was storming over to him, pulling the invitation out of his hand.

“Were you going through my trash?”

Andy was about to deny it, but then he decided that there was no point and he should just run with it. “Why did you throw the wedding invitation in the trash?”

Serena paused for a minute, processing that, as though she was trying to come up with an answer. “Doesn’t matter.”

Andy paused for a minute, shifting on his feet to cross his arms in front of his chest. The look remained on his face for a moment, before speaking. “Who’s wedding is it, Serena?”

She was quiet for a minute, before crossing her arms in front of her chest. “My brother’s. He and his husband-to-be want to tie the knot before Iowa comes to their senses.” Andy couldn’t tell if the tail end of the sentence was sarcastic or serious and that worried him a little bit. And she was far too uncomfortable with this for his taste.

“And you’re not going.” Statement, not question. Because it was obviously not going on the calendar if she hadn’t informed him about it and she had tossed the invitation in the trash.

“No. I’m not.”

Andy watched her for a minute, before shrugging. “Can I ask why?” Serena didn’t respond, just flashed him a look. He gave her one right back, before starting to walk over to her. “Look, I don’t know what the hang up is, if it’s your parents, or it’s your brother, or it’s what he’s doing, but—this is your brother, and this is something incredibly important to him. He wants you there. If he didn’t, he wouldn’t have invited you. Just—tell me you’ll think about it, alright?”

“Andy—it isn’t that simple.”

“Can you tell me why?” She was quiet again, before turning away from him, back towards the doorway of the kitchen. Andy sighed slightly, before turning and heading towards her, sliding his arms around her waist and pulling her back against his chest, just keeping her close. “I know it might seem like it’s going to be bad, but you won’t know until you get there. And if you don’t go, you might miss out on something pretty fantastic. Just tell me you’ll think about it.”

Serena leaned back against him, just closing her eyes and relaxing against him before nodding. “I’ll think about it.”

“Good.”

“Can we talk about something else now?”

“Yes,” he said with a nod, turning her back around again. “In fact, if you want, we can not talk at all.”

“Right from family talk to sex talk?” Serena said, raising an eyebrow as she wrapped her arms around his neck. “Seriously?”

Andy grinned as he started to back her towards the bedroom. “What can I say? I’m just talented like that.”
