Andy had beer, chips, dip, everything that he needed for a great day of football with the exception of four people between the ages of twenty-five and thirty eight. He missed his family. He missed yelling at the TV with them. He missed throwing food at them, and hearing about their lives, just generally being around family. It made him feel lonely. And he really didn't want to feel lonely.
Taking a deep breath, he pushed himself off the couch and made his way out towards the kitchen, searching out his roommate for the moment. "Hey, Jen? You around?"
She looked up, caught red-handed with a pint of ice cream and spoon. "Umm...yeah?" She smiled shyly.
"Busy?" he asked, smirking slightly as he saw her with the ice cream.
"Nope," she grinned.
He grinned back at her, before tilting his head back towards the living room. "Wanna watch the game with me?"
Jenny made a face. "I've told you I hate sports."
"Yeah, I know," he sighed. "And normally I wouldn't ask, but -- I'm feelin' kinda lonely in there, and I could use some company. You don't have to even pay attention, just -- talk to me."
Her spoon tapped her lips in thought. "I thought men don't want to be talked to during the game."
"Yeah, well -- I can multitask." He gave her a wide smile, before tilting his head to the side slightly. "Please?"
"Mmmmm, fine. But I'm not sharing my ice cream."
"Fair enough," he said with a happy nod, before starting to turn back towards the living room. "And I'll even share my beer."
She got up and followed, taking her ice cream with. Andy plopped back down on his couch and reached for his beer, before patting the seat next to her and waiting for her to sit. She took a seat next to him and sat back, grabbing a nearby magazine.
"So," he sighed as he glanced at her. "What've you been up to lately?"
"Nothing much," she shrugged and glanced over. "You?"
"Same. Been trying to find a job, but that's slow going."
She grinned. "So you're gonna stick around here for awhile?"
"That was the plan," he said with a grin. "You got a problem with that?"
"No, I think it'd be cool. I just wish I had a second bedroom to offer you. That couch won't be comfortable for long."
"Nah, don't worry about it. This couch is a lot more comfortable than most I've slept on."
"Andy...you can't live on a couch. And...we're bound to get in each other's way with...life."
"You'd be surprised what I could live on," he said with a look. "And if I'm getting in your way, feel free to let him know."
"You won't, but I don't want to be in your way."
"Not gonna happen," he said, flashing her a grin as his attention got drawn back to the TV for a moment. "Trust me."
She shrugged. "If you say so." Then she went back to her magazine.
Andy went back to watching the game for a moment, and his eyebrows went up as the play started to get exciting. The pass went to the receiver, the receiver started running and he was sitting on the edge of his seat. "Go! Go! GOGOGOGOGOGO!"
Jenny peered up from her magazine, more to watch him in amusement than give any thought to the game.
"Yes! Keep going, keep going, keep going -- TOUCHDOWN!" He flopped back against the couch with a grin, using the hand he was holding his beer in to point at the TV. "Did you see that? Eighty-five yard return for a touchdown."
She snorted and shook her head. "Good for him?"
"That was beautiful," he grinned. "I mean you don't see plays like that these days. I could kiss someone that was so beautiful."
"How can a guy running be that good?"
"Do you know how hard it is to run for eighty-five yards without getting tackled?"
She shook her head. "Nope." Then she looked back down at her magazine. She really wasn't too impressed.
He laughed slightly at that, before moving closer to her. "You really don't like sports, huh?"
"I just don't see what the excitement is. I don't understand the cheering and screaming and jumping up and down."
He shrugged. "I don't know if I can explain it, really. It's just -- an experience. My dad's been taking me and my brothers to games for as long as I can remember. It's a family thing for me."
"I guess that makes sense," she nodded, glancing to him. She studied him a bit. She liked when he talked about his family like that.
He watched her back for a minute, before raising an eyebrow. "What?"
She shook her head and looked down, a blush rising on her cheeks. "Sorry. It's just...sweet. Not a lot of people still care about their families like they should."
He nodded, before smirking at her. "You're cute when you're blush."
Her hands clapped over her face as she went more red. "Shuddup."
"No, you are," he teased, before moving closer to her, and brushing his fingers against an area where most girls were ticklish. "'specially when you get all red -- "
She jumped slightly and grabbed his hand. "Don't," she said quickly.
He raised an eyebrow at her, watching her face for a minute. "I do something wrong?"
She bit her lip and shook her head with enough force to make her curls bounce. "No...you just...surprised me. Quick...moves...surprise me easy."
Andy watched her a little while longer, before starting to pull away slightly. "I'm sorry."
Which made her feel bad, so she held onto his hand and looked at him again. "No, it's really okay. I just startle easy. Nothing against you."
He looked down at his hand in hers, before shrugging slightly, but he didn't pull away. "Didn't mean to scare you, though."
She shrugged with a small smile. "I know you didn't. But...now you know quick movements aren't the best around me?" She tried to give it a hopeful edge, wanting him to relax again.
And he sensed that. "Now I know," he nodded, before giving her a lopsided smile and flopping back against the couch again.
She smiled and let him go, then picked up her magazine. She didn't exactly read it, but held it in her lap. Andy tried not to seem too disappointed when he let her go, but didn't push, turning his attention back to the game and sipping his beer.
Jenny sighed and dropped the magazine on the coffee table, before leaning back again. She glanced at the tv, hoping she might be able to get something from it. After a moment, she frowned. She pointed to the screen. "What's that flag-thingy for?"
"The yellow one, or the red and black target shaped looking thing?"
She looked at him, very lost. "Any of them?"
He chuckled slightly before nodding. "Okay, the yellow ones? Are for penalties. That's when one of the teams has done something relatively unsportsman like. The red and black are for measuring first downs."
"Oh..." she nodded slowly. "They should use brighter colors. Like...well no that wouldn't work." She shrugged. "Still weird to me."
Andy shrugged as well. "I think you only really get it if you like the sport."
"Mmm, guess so." She grabbed her ice cream that was starting to melt and took a spoonful to her mouth. She went back to the container for more, not realizing the smudge that had landed between her nose and lip.
Andy glanced over at her and smirked slightly again, before leaning over towards her a bit. "You got a little something on your -- " He finished with a gesture against his own nose.
Jenny's face went red again and she left her spoon in the container, then rubbed at her own face. "Did I get it?"
"No, hold on a sec," Andy frowned, before moving his hand towards her face again, brushing at her lip with his thumb.
She closed her eyes so she wouldn't have to figure out which awkward direction to look in as he did. He brushed away the ice cream while his free hand came up to brace the side of her neck lightly, holding her still. He moved the hand with the ice cream back, sucking it off his thumb, but the other hand stayed where it was, his thumb brushing against her lips lightly on instinct. She breathed softly at that, if not a bit nervously, and slowly opened her eyes to look at him. He watched her carefully for a moment, before leaning in and kissing her softly -- no pressure, no pushing, just a kiss.
Her breath caught slightly, and her hand moved up to cover over his as she gently kissed him back. He held the kiss for a moment when she kissed him back, before pulling back a bit and looking at her. She looked back, biting her lip slightly.
He watched her for a minute. "Was that okay? I didn't mean to -- "
She nodded and looked down. "It's okay. But...why..."
He shrugged slightly, following her eyes. "Felt good at the time."
A small, forced smile came to her lips. "One of those...one time kinda things?"
He tilted his head to the side slightly. "Only if you want it to be."
She glanced up to meet his eyes. "I'm not-I mean..." Her cheeks went red. "I can't-I need slow."
"I don't have a problem with slow," he said gently, moving his hand up to brush her hair away from her face.
That got more of a genuine smile from her. "Good," she said quietly.
He grinned back at her, before shifting closer. "So does that mean I could do it again?"
Her cheeks were still a light red in color. "Just that," she nodded.
"Just that is fine," he nodded, before leaning in to kiss her gently.
She met him halfway and returned the kiss, her hand settling against his chest lightly. He kept the kiss soft and simple, just sliding his arms around her and keeping her close.
Jenny pulled back and just rested against him, her head settling on his shoulder. She sighed and looked at the TV again. "I'm going to be watching a lot more of this stuff, aren't I?"
He grinned at that. "I think I can manage to keep you entertained."
"Mmm, we'll see how long I last."
"I think you'll do pretty well."
"You hope I'll do well," she chuckled.
"No, I think you will," he smirked. "There's a difference.
"Difference being...?"
"I know I'm persistent enough to wear you down."
"I doubt it. If I can stand up to my big brother, I can stand up to anyone."
"But I bet I'm cuter than he is."
She tipped her head up to look at him and pretended to consider it. Andy gave her a completely innocent look as he waited for her to make her decision.
"Hmm, I guess you are."
He grinned. "Told ya so."
She smirked. "Less cute with the cockiness."
He laughed. "I'm not cocky all the time."
"Good," she nodded. "I like you better without it."
"Good," he nodded back.
"Watch your game," she said, nodding at the TV. "I don't want to be held responsible for you missing anything important."
"Okay," he said with a grin, leaning back to pay attention to the TV.
Jenny sighed and reached over for her book, then leaned back against him and read quietly while he watched the game. Andy dropped off to watch the game, reaching for his beer and just looking to relax.
